Rubber Hose Material Guide: EPDM vs NBR, HNBR, FKM, and AEM

How to narrow rubber hose material options by media, temperature, oil or fuel exposure, coolant use, and routing before sending a custom hose RFQ.

Choose by media first: coolant, oil, fuel, air, or chemicals

The first question is simple: what will touch the hose wall? Coolant, air, oil, fuel, chemical additives, and abrasive slurry do not ask the same thing from rubber. Temperature and pressure matter, but media compatibility should lead the discussion.

    Common compound starting points

    Decision areaTypical directionWhat to confirm
EPDMCoolant, heater, radiator, weather-exposed water linesA common first review for water and glycol circuits. Not a default choice for oil or fuel.
NBROil-resistant hose applicationsUseful where oil exposure is central. Confirm temperature and fuel compatibility separately.
HNBRHigher-performance oil, heat, and automotive environmentsOften reviewed when NBR is not enough for heat or durability requirements.
FKMHigher chemical and heat resistance needsMore specialized. The exact media and temperature range should be reviewed before quoting.
AEM or CRSelected automotive or industrial air and fluid routingUseful in specific environments where heat, oil, ozone, or weathering requirements overlap.

    Geometry changes the material decision

A straight extruded hose, a molded rubber part, and a mandrel-formed hose can use different production routes even when the compound family is similar. If the hose needs a tight bend, branch, molded feature, or non-round end, send the geometry early.

Information that prevents the wrong quote

    • Working media, including additives or concentration if known
    • Continuous temperature, peak temperature, and surrounding heat source
    • Working pressure, vacuum condition, and burst target if applicable
    • Inside diameter, wall thickness, bend radius, length, and end connection
    • Whether the hose is extruded, formed, molded, branched, or assembled
    • Expected prototype quantity, first batch quantity, and annual demand

    Mistakes that slow down sourcing

    • Using the old hose color as the main material clue
    • Listing only the vehicle model without hose dimensions
    • Saying oil-resistant without naming the oil, temperature, and exposure time
    • Requesting a price before confirming whether tooling is needed
    • Assuming one rubber compound covers coolant, fuel, oil, and air at the same time
