Start with media and exposure
AEM, or ethylene acrylic elastomer, is one possible rubber material direction for hose projects involving heat, ozone, weathering, and limited oil-related exposure. It is not a universal replacement for EPDM, NBR, HNBR, FKM, or silicone.
- Confirm the media inside the hose, including additives or contamination risk.
- Review continuous temperature, peak temperature, pressure, vacuum, or pulse condition.
- Check outdoor exposure, ozone, abrasion, movement, and nearby heat source.
- Confirm hose shape, bend radius, clamp area, quantity, and repeat-order requirement.
Where AEM usually fits
AEM is often considered when a hose needs heat and weathering resistance with limited oil mist or oil-related exposure, depending on formulation and application. It can be relevant for automotive and industrial hose programs where standard EPDM may not be enough, but full FKM-level chemical resistance is not the starting requirement.

Material comparison
| Decision area | Typical direction | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| AEM | Heat, ozone, weathering, and selected oil-mist exposure | Review HNBR or FKM if oil exposure is stronger or continuous. |
| EPDM | Water-glycol coolant, heater, radiator, and weather-exposed water lines | Often the starting direction for coolant circuits, not oil or fuel. |
| NBR or HNBR | Oil-related hose applications | Confirm fuel, temperature, and durability requirements separately. |
| FKM | Higher chemical, oil, fuel, or heat resistance | More specialized and should be tied to exact media and temperature. |
| VMQ silicone | Coolant, air, formed geometry, color, and thermal cycling | Review liner or alternate compound if oil or fuel contact is significant. |
Inputs for AEM material review
- Fluid or air media inside the hose
- Oil, fuel, coolant, chemical, or vapor exposure
- Continuous and peak temperature
- Working pressure, vacuum, pulse, or burst target
- Outdoor exposure, ozone, abrasion, and movement
- Hose ID, OD, wall thickness, bend radius, and end connection
- Existing sample, drawing, or marked installation photo
